Kyushu Island - Part 1

 May 15-16 - the first couple of days on Kyushu Island after leaving Nagasaki. We're quickly into agricultural land, then in and out of smaller seaport towns. 


Some very steep hills as we go around these neatly manicured valleys. Ursula is on the road down there having gone an extra three or four kilometres thanks to ambiguous gps prompts...
Not long later, she arrives at lunch. Rae in the meantime got on the van, his knees struggling to enjoy the climbs. 
Lots of varying and interesting scenery en route.

the two of us in front of the Imperial Palace grounds May30-31 - two days in Tokyo. First day we did a lot of walking; the second we did an organized bike tour with a local company (on their bikes) The Ramen place around the corner from the hotel. The menu is on the machine. You select and pay on the machine. The two guys in the kitchen have it ready in minutes. Room for eight people at the counter. And it was good.   Visits to various parks and many shrines and gates, all dating way back although many rebuilt after being damaged in various conflicts including the second world war. Even when shuttered, attractive shops... The national gardens... The old fish market area, now still selling fish but more given over to tourists and eateries...  Interesting take on walking the dog around one of the shrines... A bigger-than-life transformer in front of a leisure centre - this is for the grandkids... Some lovely murals in subways station walls, and, no surprise, clean subways... The Tokyo Go

The finish... Sapporo

The final week of riding in Japan on Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four major islands... the final five days on the bikes to Sapporo. We arrived in Sapporo a week ago  - just didn't get around to telling you about it until now.  Leaving Hakodate, we followed the shoreline for about 40 km, first passing the Kakodate docks and ferry port, then a number of small fishing villages, then going inland (a climb of course). There's a fair amount of logging in Japan's forests with all the logs being cut to a precise length (not as long as what's on BC logging trucks) before leaving where they were cut. Judging from the Hakodate harbour, they move as ship's cargo rather than being floated. The coast here had steep hills and rocky shores - not much in the way of sandy beaches. After 40 km, we crossed the peninsula - hills to climb of course adding up to about 600 m vertical - to the Sea of Japan shore 750 km across the water from Vladivostok. Still fishing villages

 June 1-5 - we leave Tokyo behind. First a bus transfer to get away from Tokyo's traffic with a stop at the Nikko Tōshō-gū Shinto shrine built in the 17th century and dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Together with two nearby shrines, it forms the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site, containing 42 structures, five of which are designated as National Treasures of Japan. ...and another variation on taking the dogs for a walk... The next day we set out in pouring rain through what would have been beautiful forested hillsides... this was about as nice as it got that day...   ...until reaching the hotel in the Samurai city of Aizawakamatsu... Better weather the next day with immediate hill-climbing out of the town...  ...up through ski resorts which looked pretty bleak in the off-season and perhaps also suffering the COVID slow-down...
