UNESCO World Heritage Sites

May 10 - The rest day at Gyeongju gave us the chance to visit the Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Bulguksa dates back to the 7th century. These two pagodas (as we understand it) are original relics that have survived conflicts since the Silla kingdom. Other buildings have been rebuilt over the years and more restored.

Near by is the Seokguram Grotto cave temple that was built in 751. No photography allowed of the Buddha.
Gyeongju was the centre of the Silla kingdom of the 7-8-9th centuries and is home to a swath of burial mounds of Silla monarchs.

One has been excavated and is displayed in a museum in town.
Prawns for dinner and one more sleep on the floor before biking to Busan.
