Fourth Time Lucky - at last we'll cycle Korea-Japan

In 2019 we signed-up for TDA's inaugural six-week cycling trip through South Korea and Japan. It was to take place May-June 2020. Alas, that's when COVID-19 came and the trip was postponed for a year. And it was postponed a second and third time as the world endured the various precautions and restrictions associated with the pandemic. At last, it looks like 2023 is the year. We start in Seoul on May 4th and end in Sapporo on June 16th, itinerary below. 

We'll try to post new blog entries every five or six days - this is not a camping trip so we'll be in hotels every night with electricity and internet so maybe more often. The next couple of days we'll be doing the pre-travel paperwork, not a trivial task even though neither country requires visas, and packing the bags and bikes. And hopefully a few kilometers on the bikes just to keep the muscles from seizing up before we leave.

First Three Days in the saddle

7 May - we got into Andong yesterday after riding 320 km on the first three riding days. First day in sunny warm weather, Second day in mostly (but not all) dry overcast weather with moderate temperatures. Third day, yesterday, mostly rain with a headwind and temperature around 10 degrees, also at 123 km the longest of the three days. So in three days, more miles on the bike than the previous 6 months put together. Absolutely knackered by the time we got here, about 6 pm last night.  Leaving Seoul, the customary start photos, here we are with Eve and Greg with whom we've now done several of these trips. We were quickly onto bike paths along the Han River. 'Path' is hardly the word. These are like super highways compared with the most bicycle infrastructure back home. We lost count of the bridges across the Han as we departed Seoul. Seoul Ready to Start the Journey

Great trip so far.  We thank our friends Chun and Sangeun, who live part time in Squamish and part time here in Seoul, for meeting us on Sunday and giving us an amazing first impression of Korea. First stop was for lunch at the Tosokchon Samgyetang restaurant - considered the top restaurant in Korea for its traditional ginseng chicken soup - from the outside an unimposing building in traditional style but room for over 400 diners. Chun said that we needed to be there early to avoid the crowd - little did we realize how much of a crowd it would draw - the line was literally around the block, several hundred in line waiting to get it, when we left. A delicious meal - glad we didn't eat a big breakfast. On to the royal palace with its ornate roof lines and colourful changing of the guard.
